Institution History

Politeknik Kesejahteraan Sosial (Poltekesos) Bandung is the oldest higher education institution in Indonesia under the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. It was established in 1964 as Sekolah Tinggi Kesejahteraan Sosial (STKS) Bandung, an upgrade from the Higher Social Vocational Course (KKST) with a two-year education period. Previously, it was known as the Basic Social Course A (KDSA), established in 1957 with a one-year education period.

From 1964 to 1970, the institution offered a Professional Social Work Education program at the Associate Degree level. In 1971, the education program was upgraded with the introduction of the Bachelor’s (S1) program. Following the regulations from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia regarding the abolition of the associate degree program, since 1985, in addition to the S1 program, the institution also offered a Diploma III program. The Diploma IV program began in the 1989/1990 academic year.

On January 18, 2001, the status of STKS as a Government Higher Education Institution was confirmed through Presidential Decree No. 14 of 2001. The organization and working procedures of STKS Bandung were confirmed by the Minister of Social Affairs Decree No. 24 PEG-HUK/2002 and the Minister of Social Affairs Regulation No. 51/HUK/2006 concerning the Statute of STKS Bandung. Additionally, based on the approval letter from the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of National Education No. 15/D/T/05 dated January 10, 2005, starting from the 2006 academic year, STKS Bandung offered a Professional Social Work Study Program (Specialist-1/Sp-1). This Specialist-1 (Sp-1) Social Work Education Program includes two concentrations: Clinical Social Work and Community Social Work.

The Diploma-IV (D-IV) program, with the degree of Applied Bachelor of Social Work (S.Tr.Sos), was implemented in 2015. In 2016, the Diploma-IV Study Program was reaccredited with an A grade according to the BAN-PT Decree No. 0188/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/Dipl-IV/IV/2016. Subsequently, students began taking the Social Worker Certification Exam through the education pathway and obtained the Social Worker Competency Certificate in 2017.
